Cambridge Electrical Company offers a full range of services, including PAT testing (Portable Appliance Testing). Competitively priced and guaranteed standards of work, you can be assured of a first class quality of workmanship as standard.

According to legislation all workplaces, suppliers of electrical equipment, rental properties and residential homes must ensure that portable appliances are safe, preventing harm to users. It is recommended that portable appliances over 1 year of age should be subject to annual testing to ensure they are safe, well-maintained and suitable for the purpose for which they are being used.

PAT testing is an important part of any Health and Safety policy. It contributes to a well thought out and adhered to due diligence programme.  By conducting regular portable appliance testing, you will be helping to ensure that your business/estate will:

  • Help keep employees/users safe
  • Be minimising the risk of fire or injury
  • Meet due diligence for portable appliances
  • Satisfy insurance requirements
  • Comply with Health and Safety regulations

Good practice

Cambridge Electrical Company recommends that in all situations where PAT testing is required, the following good practice should be followed with all electrical appliances:

  • User checks – performed by the user of the equipment/appliance prior to each use , looking for signs of wear, frayed wires, potentially unsafe issues
  • Formal visual inspection – performed by a competent person regularly (frequency dependant on type of appliance), the competent person is typically a trained member of staff responsible for Health and Safety.  Items of concern should be condemned until checked by a qualified electrician.
  • Periodical PAT testing – recommended to be only conducted by a qualified electrician.

Cambridge Electrical Company PAT testing service includes the inspection of the following:

  • Formal Visual Inspection:
    • Checking of plug type, compliance and damage. Fuse rating. Cable integrity including, wear and tear, damage from heat, cuts and abrasions. Damage to Housing including, cracks, dents, corrosion
  • Formal Portable Appliance Test
    • Checking the Earth bond, Insulation strength, Load test, leakage current, substitute leakage current and functional (running) tests

Portable appliances classification:

For the ease of identification, electrical appliances are broken down into 2 categories:

  • Class I – most electrical equipment that has an earth wire. Including, most computers, toasters, fridges, photocopiers, etc. (if the appliance has a lot of exposed metal work, then it is probably a Class I item).
  • Class II – most electrical equipment that doesn’t have an earth wire, but instead relies on double or reinforced insulation (or both) for its electrical safety. For example, most plastic handheld power tools, hair dryers, clock radios, Hi-Fi systems, modern televisions, etc.

Pricing:

All of Cambridge Electrical Company pricing scales are tailored to the customer dependent upon needs. Simply put, the more items that require PAT testing, the cheaper we are.

*Attendance fees charged where appropriate.

It is important to remember that PAT testing can only verify the equipments safety at the time of testing.  Subsequent handling or use may create damage that leads to the appliance being unsafe. This is why Cambridge Electrical Company recommends a regular schedule in place of visual inspection as part of your Health and Safety policy.

Certification and Documentation:

All test results will be documented with both paper or electronic copies available.

PAT test records may be customised to suit individual customers requirements.
